How To Make Large Scale Abstract Landscape Drawing

By Kevin Brooks

Painting is one of the most enjoyable activities to do for the people who have the passion for it. So many forms of painting are present thus each artist has his/her style, but the end product is always eye-catching. Large scale abstract landscape drawing is one of the mastery arts, and the painter goes through a series of steps to bring out an image that leaves the viewer with an exquisite mood. If you are a beginner and would like to train how to paint in this particular form, you must be ready to concentrate and repeat the painting several times before it becomes just as you want.

The steps that one should follow are not very difficult for people who are gurus in painting. However, for the starters, it requires a lot of practice and determination to draw nice portraits. First of all, you must always have a clue, like scenery that you like and would love to paint. Practice enough to avoid making minute mistakes in large layouts because the small mistakes are magnified.

The next thing is to know the message he/she would like to communicate through the painting. Then, the canvas is divided into some sections depending on the scene one wants to draw. Dark non-concrete shapes are then used in painting masses using four basic value planes.

Make sure that the sky always gets the most lighting since it normally is the source of light for everything. Ground planes then follow but with lesser lighting as they normally get light from the sky. Planes that are slanted like hills, slanted rocks as well as mountains get light that is less than ground planes while buildings, trees and other upright planes get the lowest light.

The next step is to start defining the features like trees with the right amount of shading. For instance, trees should have a dark green color that is rich at the bottom while the top is shaded with a light green color. When mixing the colors, try to add all colors that you will be suing on the palette so that the exercise becomes simpler and harmonious.

Depending on the kind of painting you are making, use the palette knife to scrub or scrape the painting and deconstruct as frequently as possible. This will sketch to be soft and simple and have edges that are hard at the focal point. Always use bigger brushes from start to finish so that you do not poke the portrait.

After that, you should start working colors all over the painting and define it more. The main aim at this stage is to try and make the painting look more opaque and concentrate on values. The paint application is thickened, but it should be scraped off so as soften the edges then add more paint on the scraped areas.

At the final stages, you should use the smaller flat brushes as well as palette knives so that you add on the details. After refining the images, intensifying focal points as well as pushing the portrait thickness, hard edges, contrast and value, you should let it dry. After it has completely dried, start glazing and sand it to make it more exquisite.
