What Happens During Play Therapy

By Virginia King

Children have issues with their lives just as much as their moms and dads. They can go through as stage of anger where they throw many tantrums. Some kids will become withdrawn and isolated. Other children will display a sudden change in behaviour, becoming hyperactive. It is important to be aware of these symptoms and basic changes. There are people who specialize in kids, such as with play therapy.

This is more specialized and a well recommended form of therapy which is used for children who are struggling in many different ways. Parents may notice that their child is having problems and expressing them in various ways. However, they don't know how to help them. This is when they need professional help.

Parents shouldn't feel week in parenting skills. It is a child psychologist who is trained in this area. They are experienced to know what symptoms to look for and whether the child needs to focus on something more specialized. Symptoms are also closely related, so one has to be careful when diagnosing something. That is why self diagnosing something is not recommended.

The therapist is able to gain their trust naturally as well. This can come in their own time as they work together with them in a more practical way. They will also begin to get an idea of what the child has been exposed to by the way in which they play and when they are engaged in imaginary play.

This practical type of play is helpful when children need to develop better communication skills or they need to solve problems and make decisions. However, the therapist can also discover more serious problems, such as whether there is abuse or violence that the child has been exposed to.

They have free choices in what they are able to create and make. The decision is theirs. They learn to express themselves and this leads to a good connection. This doesn't always happen with one on one interaction. This is why this type of therapy can be so effective. It helps the child to build up a relationship with the therapist. They will begin to gain their trust.

When finding someone like this, it is important to opt for someone who has a good reputation. However, they should also have the qualifications as well as the skills which relate to other forms of therapy. This can relate to cognitive behavioural therapy which can help both kids and adults. This has become very successful for a number of years. Gestalt therapy is also something that most play therapists should learn about.

Of course parents should know more about how their child is doing from time to time. They may ask the child how therapy was, but it wouldn't be right to dig in too deeply. This is a relationship between the therapist and the child and it shouldn't be interfered with. The psychologist will find out more about what the child is feeling and how they are behaving which will give them an idea of what they are going though. This will lead to a particular diagnosis or stage of life which bring on various emotions.
