Sand Tray Therapy For Your Kids

By Patrick Campbell

Children struggling emotionally is the hardest thing to handle since they are not able to really express their thoughts and emotions. This is where a sand tray therapy comes in. An expressive therapy which also known as sandplay. So, consider this if you have a child who is suffering emotionally for many reasons.

This therapy is used most of the time in children, but this can also be applied to teens, adults, couples, and families. During the session, a person will be asked the construct a miniature of his or her thoughts using sand and miniature toys. What is created will act as the reflection of the life of a person, allowing her or him to resolve the conflicts and gain self acceptance.

What to expect. This will take place in a container that is shaped like a box, which is referred by therapists as sand trays. These trays will be filled with sand and miniature toys, in order to make a play world that will reflect real experiences and real people. Clients would have to choose a toy then build a world that reflects what is currently going on.

Therapists will observe the arrangement and choice of toys without interrupting the person, allowing them to find the answers in themselves. After this, the therapist and client will analyze ad discuss the toy choices, arrangement pattern, and its symbolic or metaphoric meaning. One session might be enough, but there are cases in which it would take years.

How it works. This form of therapy was developed by psychologist named Dora Kalff in the 1950s. Kalff combined different philosophies and techniques to create her very own therapeutic approach. She learned about world technique from Margaret Lowenfeld, the psychologist who developed sand tray intervention.

Kalff then make use of this into her own therapy. With sand trays, clients, with the guide of a therapist begin to understand what connects the world created in the sand from the inner world of an individual. Through making changes, clients usually find themselves empowered to create the same changes into the real world.

Individuals in treatment will be required to open up about their emotional thoughts, sharing their thoughts and feelings. The therapeutic relationship in this has to be strong for an effective treatment. Unlike with the other one where in the therapist will have to focus on the unconscious, providing people a protected space and opportunity to have a nonverbal communication.

Most children cannot verbalize their emotional state, specially when they are traumatized by a situation, was abused or neglected. The nonverbal nature of this therapy along with the medium could help children in achieving comfortable and secure feeling. With the instruction of the therapist, children can freely develop and play their expression of situations.

Meeting the therapist in person would be good. By doing this, you would get a feel if your child is going to be comfortable working with the person. Do not forget to ask them questions like how many individuals with the same problems with your kid have they worked on. Compare the cost from one another as well before you choose among them.
