How Artists Make Amazing Wood And Metal Sculptures

By Ann Harris

Sculpture creation is an art form that impresses and amazes many people. They are beautiful to look at and last for many years. Most people have very little idea of the amount of work that goes into creating them. How amazing wood and metal sculptures are made is an incredible process. They both use different tools and techniques to make something that is long lasting. Some of the oldest ones are many centuries old and this is one of the oldest craft forms in existence.

Carving wood takes time and patience and special skills. The artist has to select the best wood for what they are going to create. The tools also come in varying sizes to help them shape them properly. Harder woods last longer but are much more difficult to work with. The softer woods are easier to manipulate but do not last as long. Being susceptible to weather and bugs, they are often displayed inside to help protect them.

The tools used for wood sculptures haven't changed much over time. They include gouges, chisels, and carving knives. They will also finish the object with different degrees of sandpaper. Mistakes come easy, so the artist will work long hours, very slowly to be sure that any are minimized and the final art is perfect.

The first step the woodworker will make is picking which type of wood they want to use. Once they pick it, they will begin by using the larger tools, cutting away until a shape begins to form. With each step, they will select smaller gouges and tools to make finer lines and shapes. In the end, they will use the sandpaper to create a nice finish to the piece.

Metalworking has some similar methods for the original design but then differs greatly. The history for this type of sculpture does not go as far back as the woodworking craft but still has a long history. They make a mold and then after several steps are able to create the actual metal formation. Most of the techniques are the same but with some modern changes in the material.

For metalworks, the tools will include wax, rubber, and ceramic. Some will include clay to make the first mold. This is where the actual sculpture is created. Since the clay is easier to work with than wood, they can easily fix mistakes or start over without losing the rest of the design.

An initial form may be made from any material including wood, clay, or other material. The next step is to make a rubberized mold that will hold the shape. The wax is then poured into the mold to make another copy. This copy is then fine-tuned by the artist until it is just right. An external shell is then made from sand and ceramic. The wax is then melted away and bronze or other metal is poured into the mold and allowed to cool. The ceramic is broken away and the final sculpture is again fine-tuned in order to make it perfect.

Art has a history that goes back to prehistoric periods. Modern art has not changed much is how it is created. Most of the sculptures that are around and on display in museums go back centuries and honor religious figures, leaders, and some may be on display in homes.
